A Longitudinal Study on Older Adults` Use of Medical Services
Lee Mi-Jin

Abstract
This study investigates which factors are associated with older adults¡¯ use of medical services, guided by the behavioral model of Newman and Andersen. Data comes from the three waves of the ¡°Aging and the Quality of Life of the Elderly in Korea: A Longitudinal Study¡± and medical services include hospitalization and physician contacts. Generalized estimating equations(GEE) are used for statistical analyses. The results show that odds of being hospitalized are associated with the lower baseline age, worse self-rated health, the greater number of medical conditions, and the lower cognitive abilities. Moreover, the associative factors of contacting physicians include aging, the lower baseline age, being recipients of medical assistance, living in urban areas, worse self-rated health, the greater number of chronic conditions, and the higher cognitive abilities. In conclusion, the policy implications for reducing inequitable access to medical services within the elderly population are discussed.
